ATLAS STAR STUDIO

Privacy.

Updated 7 October 2026. This page describes the information used to create and save your star maps.

Your map and browser draft

The studio uses the text, place, coordinates, date, time and design settings you enter to generate a preview and downloads. Your browser stores a draft so you can return to your work. Drafts remain until you replace them or clear this site’s browser storage. Anyone using the same browser profile may be able to see that draft.

Google search suggestions stay in memory during the search. When you are signed out, a location selected from Google is kept for the current editing session and is excluded from the persistent browser draft. Other draft settings can still be saved.

Accounts and saved maps

If you create an account, Atlas stores your email as a sign-in identifier, a salted password hash, account and credit records, and session records in Cloudflare D1. The service does not verify email ownership. A sign-in cookie identifies your session and expires after 14 days; signing out revokes that session.

Saving a map associates its configuration with your account in D1. The print files (PNG, PDF and SVG) are then made on our server, in a Cloudflare Browser Rendering session, and stored in a private Cloudflare R2 bucket. If your design includes your own photo (a photo in the sky or a background image), that photo is sent when you save, kept privately only while the files are made, then deleted. Before you save, photos stay in your browser.

Saved records are retained for your collection; they do not have an automatic deletion schedule. Location data obtained from Google Geocoding is isolated to the account that saves it and is not reused to answer other users’ searches.

Location search providers

When Google search is available, the text you enter in the location search and the search language are sent through our server to Google Maps Platform. Selecting a suggestion sends its place identifier to Google to retrieve its address and coordinates. Atlas does not include your poster title, message, password or account email in these requests. Search text can itself identify a private address, so enter only the location information you want to use.

Google processes these requests under the Google Privacy Policy, which is incorporated here for the Google services used by the studio. Google can retain information according to that policy. Atlas does not put Google suggestions or resolved locations in a shared search cache.

The fallback city catalogue uses GeoNames data within the Atlas server and does not send your search to GeoNames. If the optional Open-Meteo geocoding service is configured, it receives your location search text to return suggestions; its terms and privacy information apply to those requests. You can also enter a place name, coordinates and timezone manually without using location search.

Hosting, fonts and service protection

Cloudflare hosts the site and processes network requests, including IP addresses and technical request information. Atlas uses keyed hashes of IP addresses for rate limits and keeps temporary counters to protect accounts and location search. Cloudflare diagnostics may include technical request and error information according to the hosting configuration.

The interface loads fonts from Google Fonts. Those browser requests disclose network information such as your IP address to Google; the Google Privacy Policy applies.

Your browser controls

You can sign out to end the current session and clear this site’s cookies and browser storage to remove the local draft. Clearing browser storage does not delete your account or maps saved on the server. Downloaded files remain wherever you save or share them.
